Services offered

As part of my commitment to offering advanced treatment options, I provide the following neuromodulation therapies:

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

rTMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. By placing an electromagnetic coil against the scalp, rTMS delivers repetitive magnetic pulses to activate nerve cells in regions implicated in depression.

Benefits of rTMS:

  • Effectiveness: Clinical studies have shown that rTMS can significantly reduce depressive symptoms, especially in individuals who have not responded to traditional treatments.

  • Non-Invasive: The procedure does not require surgery or anaesthesia, and you remain awake and alert during sessions. There is no restriction on driving.

  • Minimal Side Effects: rTMS is generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effects being mild scalp discomfort or headaches, which typically resolve shortly after treatment.

  • Session Duration: Each rTMS session usually lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Treatment Course: A typical treatment plan involves daily sessions (Monday through Friday) over two to six weeks.

  • Post-Treatment: Patients can resume normal daily activities immediately after each session, as rTMS does not impair cognitive functions or alertness.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)

tDCS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that delivers a low, constant electrical current to specific brain areas through electrodes placed on the scalp. This gentle stimulation aims to modulate neuronal activity to alleviate depressive symptoms. I use a Platoworks device which is controlled with an app on your smartphone and has a wide range of effective treatment protocols.

Benefits of tDCS:

  • Accessibility: tDCS devices are relatively portable, and treatments can be administered at home.

  • Safety: tDCS is associated with minimal side effects, the most common being mild skin irritation at the electrode sites.

  • Adjunctive Therapy: tDCS can be used alongside other treatments, such as antidepressant medications or psychotherapy, to enhance overall therapeutic outcomes.

    Logistics of tDCS Treatment:

  • Session Duration: Each tDCS session typically lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Treatment Course: Treatment protocols can vary, but a common regimen involves daily sessions over about 3 weeks.

Both rTMS and tDCS offer promising alternatives for individuals seeking non-pharmacological treatments for depression, or in cases where medications have been partially effective.
